As you may know, approximately 240 million people in the United States were eligible to vote in the 2020 presidential election and roughly only 66% submitted ballots. We as physicians and healthcare professionals know that many health outcomes are determined by non-medical factors, such as access to food, transportation and other social determinants of health. Although we know these barriers to health equity for our patients all too well, shockingly and unfortunately, physicians reportedly vote at 10% lower rates than the rest of the country. How can that be when we know that healthcare is steeped in health policy, which often dictates how we professionally practice and ultimately take care of our patients?
As President of the NMA, I challenge you to MAKE VOTING A PRIORITY. Whether it is early voting or in-person voting on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, simply VOTE!, AND ENCOURAGE YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND YOUR PATIENTS TO VOTE! Join me in taking action toward creating a healthier democracy through the simple act of voting in this and every election.
